Sherpa is alive after a week on Mount Everest – level 3
09-06-2026 15:00
A 52-year-old Nepali mountain guide, Dawa Sherpa, was miraculously found alive after being missing for nearly a week on Mount Everest.
He was last seen on May 29 in the dangerous death zone near the top of the mountain, where he stayed behind to let others descend during bad weather.
When he didn’t return, his family and the climbing community believed he had died. In fact, his wife and teenage daughter had already started traditional funeral rituals at home. However, six days later, a support team spotted Dawa crawling down the snowy slopes near Everest Base Camp. Although he suffered from frostbite on his hands, he was in surprisingly good health. He was immediately given food and water and airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Kathmandu.
His daughter explained that when they first heard the local news, they couldn’t believe it and had to ask for photos to be sure it was really their father. Experts called his survival a true miracle, even though Sherpas are incredibly strong and familiar with the harsh mountain environment.
Difficult words: miraculously (happening in a way that seems impossible), frostbite (an injury to your fingers, toes, or face caused by extreme cold), airlifted (carried to a hospital or a safe place quickly in a helicopter or an airplane).
