Skin cancer vaccine – level 2
01-05-2024 07:00
In the UK, scientists are testing a new vaccine for melanoma, a deadly skin cancer.
This vaccine is special because it is just for each person. It matches each person’s genetic information. It teaches the immune system to find and destroy dangerous cancer cells. The vaccine makes the body produce proteins and antibodies which fight the cells.
Similar tests are happening in Australia and other countries. The vaccine may help other cancers too, for example, lung, bladder, and kidney cancer. People hope it stops cancer from coming back. If the test is successful and it works, it could help people all over the world.
Difficult words: deadly (a disease which can kill you), cell (the smallest part of a living organism), antibody (a foreign substance which gets in your body).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is the potential impact of a successful trial for this personalized melanoma vaccine on global cancer treatment?
