Social media and German election – level 2

28-01-2025 15:00

The European Commission wants social media companies, like Facebook and TikTok, to show they can stop disinformation before the German election.

On January 31, there will be a test to check if these companies have the right protections, as the Digital Services Act (DSA) asks. TikTok said it would join, but other companies, like Google and Microsoft, didn’t say anything.

The test will look at how companies handle different situations where the DSA rules are needed. Important officers and experts from the companies will take part. The EU already did a similar test last year before the European Parliament elections, and it worked well. This time, the test will also involve German officials.

Difficult words: disinformation (false information shared to confuse people), protections (things which keep people or systems safe), involve (to include or contain as a necessary part).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the purpose of the test that will be conducted on January 31, and which companies are expected to participate?
