Stockholm fish tunnel – level 3
28-10-2024 07:00
Sweden has built a fish tunnel to help species that are weaker swimmers, like perch and bream.
For almost 380 years, these fish couldn’t migrate freely between Lake Malaren and the Baltic Sea. Now, the tunnel offers them a new path, which should increase biological diversity in the area. It was built in the new Slussen lock system in Stockholm, which separates the freshwater lake from the Baltic Sea. Fish like salmon can jump, but weaker swimming species have struggled in this environment. The tunnel mimics natural conditions by using stones found in archaeological digs, and a camera monitors the fish as they pass through. Interestingly, the tunnel has even attracted otters, though fences are in place to keep seals out.
This new fish tunnel is part of a broader effort to improve the ecological balance in the region. The goal is to improve the fish population in Lake Malaren by introducing new species and promoting regrowth.
Difficult words: biological diversity (variety of species), mimic (to imitate).
