Taiwan–USA Meeting – level 3
03-06-2019 15:00
For the first time in 40 years, high-ranking Taiwanese and American officials met last month. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the meeting by the end of May, saying they discussed ‘common security challenges’.
A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry expressed ‘strong dissatisfaction’ and asked the USA to ‘abide by the one-China principle’ and stop official communication with Taiwan. China sees Taiwan as part of its territory even though the island is its own country.
Difficult words: confirm (say that something is true), dissatisfaction (being dissatisfied – unhappy/angry about something), abide (conform to, follow).
