TikTok and Indonesia’s elections – level 3
16-02-2024 07:00
In Indonesia’s presidential race, candidates are using TikTok to engage with young voters.
Irene, a 22-year-old, uploads various content on TikTok, attracting attention from all three candidates. Prabowo, once a tough military figure, now showcases his softer side with quirky dance moves. His supporters even share videos of themselves crying for him. Other contenders, Anies and Ganjar, also increased their presence on the platform. Despite TikTok’s popularity among young voters, there are concerns about misinformation and manipulated content, including deepfake videos. Nevertheless, TikTok claims to combat harmful misinformation and prohibits political ads and fundraising.
Experts emphasize the importance of candidates creating entertaining content to appeal to young voters. With millions of users, TikTok has become a significant battleground for Indonesian politicians seeking to sway the electorate.
Difficult words: quirky (unusual or unpredictable), deepfake (a video in which a person’s face or body has been digitally altered so that they appear to be someone else), sway (to control or influence).
