Trump talks with Putin – level 3
21-03-2025 15:00
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy cautiously welcomed a proposed limited ceasefire with Russia but emphasized the need for more details. He is willing to stop attacks on energy infrastructure if Russia reciprocates.
His comments followed a call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite these discussions, Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure continued. Zelenskyy accused Russia of prolonging the war, while Putin rejected Washington’s push for a full 30-day ceasefire, demanding an end to Western military aid as a condition for peace. Trump denied that Putin had made such a demand. Russia agreed to halt attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector for 30 days, but other targets remain vulnerable.
Talks between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia should continue, but deep divisions remain, as Russia insists on stopping foreign aid while Ukraine refuses to make territorial concessions.
Difficult words: ceasefire (an agreement to stop fighting to allow discussions about peace), reciprocate (to do the same), vulnerable (able to be easily attacked or influenced), concession (compromise).

How did the talks reflect diverging views on implementing a ceasefire, especially regarding the duration of the halt in attacks, the condition involving Western military aid, and the specific commitment concerning Ukraine’s energy sector?
