A strong earthquake hits Turkey and Syria. The event happens on Monday early morning. Most people are asleep.

The earthquake has a magnitude of 7.8. The size is very big. The earthquake is 10 kilometers deep in the ground.

Hundreds of buildings fall down. At least 12 000 people die in Turkey. 3 500 people die in Syria.

Thousands of people are still in the rubble. The number of dead people will be much higher. People and rescue workers search the rubble all night.

Many countries send help to Turkey. The work is not easy. The earthquake makes problems at three Turkish airports. Some help does not get to where people need it.

Difficult words: asleep (sleeping), magnitude (a number which says how strong an earthquake is), rubble (broken pieces of walls and buildings).
