UAE Sends Rocket to Mars – level 3
27-07-2020 07:00
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the latest country to successfully launch a spacecraft to Mars.
The unmanned ship called ’Hope’ was launched on Sunday morning from Japan, and it is the first space mission from the UAE and the Arab world. The plan is to orbit Mars to study the planet’s weather for a full Martian year, which lasts 687 Earth days.
It is the first time that scientists will get a chance to study the planet’s atmosphere at different times of the day at different seasons. According to Omran Sharaf, the Emirates Mars Mission Project director, previous Mars missions studied the atmosphere for a specific time of the day at a specific season, which makes the current mission unique.
The ship is expected to make the 38-million-mile journey to Mars by February next year.
Difficult words: unmanned (with no crew or staff), orbit (to go around something; to be attracted to a planet or a star due to gravity); Martian (related to the planet Mars), unique (unlike anything else).
