US Senator does not want to step down – level 2
29-09-2023 15:00
Senator Bob Menendez from New Jersey was charged with corruption. He told reporters that he had 480,000 dollars in cash at home for emergencies.
He explained that was taking out cash for emergencies for 30 years because his authorities in Cuba took his family’s properties. Menendez’s parents were from Cuba, but he was born in New York. He said that some people were too quick to judge him because he’s Latino and they wanted him to quit his job.
The charges against him and his wife involve using his Senate role to help Egypt’s government. Officers found cash, gold bars, and a Mercedes-Benz at his home, and they also charged three businessmen. Some politicians asked Menendez to resign, but he refused to do it.
Difficult words: corruption (when people in power do bad things), emergency (a serious or dangerous situation, in which you must act quickly), judge (to form an opinion about someone or something).
