Weather changes where wine grows – level 3

05-03-2026 07:00

Wine production depends on stable weather, but climate change is changing the conditions that growers need.

In Chile, long droughts, higher temperatures, and unpredictable weather create serious problems for vineyards. Small producers struggle to survive as water becomes harder to find and heat damages grape plants. Large companies invest in science and new technology to protect crops and manage limited water resources more effectively.

At the same time, warmer temperatures help cooler countries such as Germany produce better grapes. Wine quality has improved because grapes now ripen more easily. However, this advantage may not last. Rising soil temperatures, new pests, and extreme weather events could create future risks for these regions as well.

Across the world, climate change is slowly changing the global wine map. Some regions gain new opportunities, while others face problems. Success increasingly depends on how quickly producers adapt their methods, protect natural resources, and respond to changing environmental conditions that affect the entire industry.

Difficult words: drought (long time without rain), unpredictable (something that changes suddenly and you cannot know what will happen), ripen (when fruit becomes ready to eat), pest (a small animal or insect that damages plants).
