Who will buy Manchester United – level 2
20-06-2023 15:00
Manchester United, an English football club, is in discussions to sell itself for over 6 billion dollars to a group led by Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani from Qatar.
The Glazer family bought the club in 2005 for 1 billion dollars, but since 2012, the club didn’t win any title. The family would sell their shares as part of the deal. The Qatari offer is more preferred than the one from British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe. If the deal goes through, it will be one of the biggest ever in sports. Manchester United’s value would be over 10 times its yearly income.
Some fans believe that the new ownership could help improve the situation of the club, but others are worried about Qatar’s human rights reputation.
Difficult words: share (a part of a company), income (money which a person or company makes), reputation (general opinions about something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What impact could the new ownership have on Manchester United's performance and the team's reputation?
