Why are there fewer children? – level 2
04-05-2026 15:00
The world is changing because people are having fewer babies. For a long time, the number of young people was much higher than the number of old people. Now, in countries like the UK and Japan, there are more elderly people.
Why are people having fewer kids? One big reason is money. It costs a lot of money to raise a child. Many young people also worry about finding a good house or a stable job. In the past, almost everyone wanted to have a family. Today, people feel free to choose. Some people want to focus on their work, and some just don’t want to be parents. This change in how we think is very important.
A world with fewer children will look different. There might be fewer schools and universities, and businesses like restaurants. The government will have less money from taxes. But fewer people means more food and water for everyone. We must learn how to live in a world that is no longer growing.
Difficult words: raise (to look after a child and help them grow), stable (something strong what does not change suddenly), tax (money you pay to the government to pay for schools and hospitals).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are two major concerns that discourage many young people from having children today?
