Windrush Day – level 2
28-06-2023 07:00
Last week, Britain commemorated the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the first ship from the Caribbean at Tilbury Docks in Essex.
The ship called HMT Empire Windrush brought hundreds of migrants on June 22, 1948, who came to help rebuild Britain after World War II. Many more Caribbean people came in the following years and they greatly contribute to modern British culture. Services in Windsor, Southwark Cathedral, and London Waterloo Station were full of dancing, singing, and celebration. King Charles said that the Windrush generation had a big impact on Britain.
But this year also marked five years since the Windrush scandal, which wrongly detained and deported thousands of people who had every right to live in the UK.
Difficult words: commemorate (to celebrate an event), migrant (a person who comes to live in another country), deport (to make someone leave a country by force).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What lasting impact have the Windrush generation had on modern Britain?
