Icelander actor and powerlifter, Hafþór ‘Thor’ Björnsson, has broken the world deadlift record, lifting 1104 pounds. Björnsson, who is 6 feet and 9 inches tall, broke the record at his gym in Iceland.
He previously won the World’s Strongest Man competition in 2018.
The strongman lifted the barbell for two seconds, before dropping the weights and roaring in delight. He beat the previous record holder and rival, Eddie Hall, who lifted 1102 pounds in 2016. After the event, Björnsson said that he was extremely proud and happy. He added that many people did not believe in him; however, he had a lot of support, too.
Björnsson is better known for his role as Gregor ’The Mountain’ Clegane in the popular TV series Game of Thrones.
Difficult words: powerlifter (a person who competes in lifting weights), deadlift (a type of lift where the weight is lifted off the ground to the level of the hips without the use of a bench or other equipment), barbell (a long bar with a weight on each end).
