Latin American governments, including influential countries like Brazil, stood by Mexico after its embassy in Ecuador was raided.

The raid aimed to arrest Jorge Glas, Ecuador’s former vice president, who had sought asylum in Mexico. The arrest was carried out on Friday night, and it led Mexico to suspend relations with Ecuador. Ecuador argued that asylum protections were invalid due to Glas’s corruption charges; however, embassies are considered sovereign territory under international law.

Governments across Latin America criticized the arrest, and Brazil called it a violation of diplomatic norms. Mexico said that it would appeal to international bodies for the violation of its embassy’s immunity. Meanwhile, US officials called for dialogue to resolve the dispute, and they emphasized strict compliance with international treaties.
