Olympic boxing and DNA tests – level 2
06-08-2024 07:00
Angela Carini from Italy left her Olympic boxing match against Algeria’s Imane Khelif after 46 seconds. She said she did it to protect herself.
Imane Khelif can box at the Paris Olympics even though she didn’t pass gender tests last year. Tests showed she has XY chromosomes, meaning she is a biological male. The IOC says she can still compete because her passport says she is female. Khelif started boxing in 2018 and fought in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, where she lost in the quarter-finals. Many female boxers think this is unfair because she has an advantage.
On Saturday, Khelif fought against Anna Luca Hamori from Hungary in the 66 kg quarter-finals. She won, and surely, she will get an Olympic medal. The IOC spokesperson said they are trying to make sports fair and safe for everyone.
Difficult words: chromosome (a small part in the body which has genetic information), biological male (a person who is born as a man), advantage (something that gives you a chance to be better than others).

What reason did Angela Carini give for leaving her Olympic boxing match against Imane Khelif?
