The World Health Organization (WHO) urges governments to improve their vaccine campaigns as COVID-19 remains an issue globally.

WHO officials reported an increase in COVID-19 cases worldwide, with Europe seeing over 20% of tests coming back positive. WHO’s COVID-19 technical boss, explained that their data from 84 countries shows a rising percentage of positive tests for SARS-CoV-2. The positivity rate varies by region but remains a concern overall.

Additionally, at least 40 athletes at the Olympic Games have tested positive for COVID-19 or other respiratory illnesses. Many countries are experiencing virus surges regardless of the season. This suggests that the virus circulation might be higher than reported. Governments must continue to invest in understanding the virus’s circulation and impact. Over the past two years, vaccination rates have dropped, especially among health workers and people over 60, which urgently needs to be addressed.
