Telegram boss in prison – level 2
29-08-2024 07:00
French police arrested Pavel Durov, the billionaire founder of the Telegram messaging app. They arrested him in France at Le Bourget airport. Durov has French and UAE citizenship, and he is in custody. Officials are investigating Telegram’s lack of checking criminal things on the app. Russia asked for respecting Durov’s rights, and some Russian officials called him a political prisoner. Telegram is a popular messaging app, especially in Russia and Ukraine, and governments asked to check it because of strong privacy rules. Elon Musk criticized the arrest. He said it was bad for free speech in Europe.
In the past, Durov refused to cooperate with governments, including Russia, to keep Telegram users safe.
Difficult words: citizenship (being a person who can legally live in a country), custody (staying in prison), lack (not enough of something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What are the reasons behind the investigation into Telegram's operations and how has Pavel Durov responded to government requests in the past?
