Mexico’s first ever woman president – level 2
07-10-2024 07:00
Claudia Sheinbaum is Mexico’s new president. She is the first woman to have this job.
There was a ceremony in Mexico City. Scheinbaum said she wants to continue the plans of the president before her, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She won the election easily but has some big problems to solve. One of these problems is gang violence, which makes life dangerous for people.
Before she became president, Sheinbaum was the mayor of Mexico City. She helped lower the number of murders but couldn’t stop the increase in people who went missing. Now, she will also try to reduce Mexico’s budget deficit but keep popular social programs at the same time.
Difficult words: gang violence (actions by a group of people meant to hurt others), mayor (the leader of a city), deficit (the amount by which something is too small).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What challenges did Claudia Sheinbaum face as the mayor of Mexico City and what issues does she plan to address during her presidency?
