Mexico’s first ever woman president – level 3
07-10-2024 07:00
Mexico has a new president, Claudia Sheinbaum, its first-ever female leader. She was sworn in during a ceremony in Mexico City and has pledged to continue the policies of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Sheinbaum won a landslide victory earlier this year, but now faces several challenges in office. One of the most significant problems is the country’s ongoing gang violence, which has caused insecurity for many citizens. Sheinbaum has been involved in politics for years and was the mayor of Mexico City, where she managed several crises, including a train crash in 2021. She reduced the city’s murder rate but couldn’t stop the rise in missing people.
As president, she must also deal with a high budget deficit, which she has promised to cut in half while maintaining her predecessor’s expensive social welfare programs.
Difficult words: predecessor (a person who held the job or office before the current holder), deficit (the amount by which something is too small), welfare (the health and happiness of a person or group).
