UK returns Chagos Islands to Mauritius – level 1

08-10-2024 07:00

The UK is giving the Chagos Islands back to Mauritius after more than 50 years.

The Chagos Islands are a group of islands in the Indian Ocean. One of these islands is called Diego Garcia. It is very important. The US has a military base there. In 1968, Mauritius becomes free from British control. But the UK keeps the Chagos Islands. The US wants to use Diego Garcia for the base. The UK makes more than 1,000 people leave their homes.

Now, the UK will return the islands to Mauritius. The US can still use the base for the next 99 years. Also, people can return to the islands. But living there will be difficult.

Difficult words: military base (a place where soldiers stay), return (to give back).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What challenges might people face when returning to live on the Chagos Islands after the UK returns them to Mauritius?
