UK returns Chagos Islands to Mauritius – level 2

08-10-2024 07:00

The UK decided to give back the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after controlling them for over 50 years. These islands are in the Indian Ocean, and one of them, Diego Garcia, is important because the US uses it as a military base.

The UK kept the islands after Mauritius became independent in 1968 and even made people leave the islands to build the base. The United Nations and other international groups wanted the UK to return the islands, and the pressure on the UK increased even more after Brexit.

The deal allows the US to use the base for 99 more years. The people who had to leave the islands will now be able to return, but living conditions on the islands are difficult.

Difficult words: military base (a place where soldiers or the army stay), pressure (force), living conditions (the situation in which people live).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the significance of Diego Garcia among the Chagos Islands and how does it relate to the United States?
