UK returns Chagos Islands to Mauritius – level 3

08-10-2024 07:00

After over fifty years, the UK is returning the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, following a historic agreement.

Located in the Indian Ocean, Hagos Islands include Diego Garcia, a crucial US military base. The UK had kept control since Mauritius gained independence in 1968, even evicting over 1,000 residents to create the military base. The dispute lasted for years, going through courts and international bodies like the UN. Increasing pressure from these institutions and declining support, especially after Brexit, pushed the UK to negotiate the handover.

Although Mauritius will control the islands, the US will continue using the base for 99 years. The evicted Chagossians may return, though living conditions on the islands are difficult. The deal is seen as a victory for anti-colonial movements and international law.

Difficult words: sovereignty (the power to govern a country or area), evict (to force people to leave a place), dispute (a disagreement or argument).
