Brazil’s philosopher of the forest – level 3

21-10-2024 15:00

A severe drought and wildfires in Brazil this year have once again demonstrated the destructive effects of climate change.

These events have raised awareness of one of Brazil’s most prominent Indigenous activists, Ailton Krenak, who advocates for a renewed relationship with nature.

Kraki, known as the philosopher of the forest, is a writer and journalist who fights for human rights and Indigenous rights in Brazil.

Krenak’s family was forced to leave their land 50 years ago due to illegal logging. He warns that human activities are supporting environmental destruction. The wildfires are devastating Brazil and its vast Amazon forest. Some events are unpredictable; however, Kenak believes that human actions are significantly contributing to the problem. He also emphasizes the importance of history and Indigenous heritage. Without knowing where we come from, we cannot understand where we are going.

Difficult words: awareness (knowing that something exists), prominent (important and famous), logging (cutting down trees), vast (extremely big).

What is Ailton Krenak's perspective on the role of human activities in environmental destruction and the importance of understanding history and Indigenous heritage?
