Sudan war and artists – level 2

06-11-2024 07:00

The 18-month war in Sudan is affecting artists. Musicians and performers in the capital city had to stop their work, and many left their homes.

Music rooms and theaters, once lively with performances, are now damaged and mostly empty. Musician Mohammed Omar says his usual music room now looks completely different due to the conflict between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces. Some artists like Husam Eldin Baballa keep playing music outdoors to cheer up people affected by the war. They hope their performances bring people some comfort.

It is hard to find equipment, as traveling between states is expensive and risky. Artists and their unions believe the government should help them continue their work during this difficult time.

Difficult words: lively (full of life), cheer up (to make someone feel happier), comfort (a pleasant and satisfying feeling).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What challenges are musicians and performers in Sudan facing due to the ongoing war, and how are some artists responding to these challenges?
