Sudan war and artists – level 3
06-11-2024 07:00
In Sudan, 18 months of conflict have deeply impacted the arts, forcing many musicians and performers to leave their work and homes.
In the capital, music rooms and theaters are now nearly empty, damaged by the fighting between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces. Mohammed Omar, a musician, recalls how a certain music room was once a place where artists gathered for rehearsals and concerts. Now, the room is almost unrecognizable. The National Theater is empty and damaged, with occasional artillery sounds replacing the music and voices that once filled it.
Despite these challenges, some artists, like musician Husam Eldin Baballa, continue performing in open spaces. They gather to entertain people, hoping to comfort those affected by the conflict. However, finding equipment is difficult, as travel is costly and unsafe. Many believe the government should support these artists so they can keep Sudan’s culture alive.
Difficult words: rehearsal (a practice performance of a play or other work for later public performance), unrecognizable (not clear or known well enough), artillery (guns).
