More migrants die – level 1
10-12-2024 07:00
On the small island of El Hierro, many migrants die or go missing.
Expert Modesto Martinez checks the bodies of migrants who die after coming from West Africa. This year, 33 migrants die, which is more than last year. They die because they have no food, water, or shelter during the trip.
Many migrants throw away their ID cards so that authorities do not send them back to their country. This makes it hard to know who they are. Some people put flowers on the grave of a migrant named Bathie Barry. They want to show respect for him and other migrants who die.
Difficult words: shelter (a safe place to stay), ID card (a card with information on it, such as the name, date of birth, address, and so on), grave (a hole in the ground where we put a dead body).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What challenges does Expert Modesto Martinez face when identifying the bodies of migrants who die on their journey from West Africa to El Hierro?
