More migrants die – level 3
10-12-2024 07:00
El Hierro, a small Canary Island, is struggling to cope with an unprecedented number of migrant deaths and disappearances.
Forensic pathologist Modesto Martinez moved there hoping for a peaceful retirement but now works constantly due to the rise in migrant fatalities. In 2024, 33 migrants arrived dead or died shortly after arrival, compared to only 11 in 2023. The Atlantic route from West Africa to the Canary Islands has become increasingly deadly, with more migrants missing or dying during the journey than before.
Martinez identifies causes of death such as hypothermia, dehydration, and seawater ingestion. Confirming identities is challenging because migrants often discard identification to avoid deportation. The Red Cross assists in tracing families, but most deceased migrants remain unidentified. Despite new cadaver refrigerators, the island’s facilities are inadequate. The grave of one migrant, Bathie Barry, symbolizes the tragedy faced by thousands. Volunteers pay small tributes, showing empathy for those lost at sea.
Difficult words: forensic pathologist (a medical doctor who investigates unexpected, or suspicious deaths), hypothermia (a dangerous drop in body temperature), cadaver (a dead body).
