More migrants die – level 2
10-12-2024 07:00
El Hierro, a small Canary Island, is facing many problems because of migrant deaths and disappearances.
Expert Modesto Martinez works hard to examine the bodies of migrants who die on the dangerous journey. This year, 33 migrants died in El Hierro, compared to 11 last year. Migrants take risky boat trips from West Africa, but many die from hypothermia or dehydration during the six-day journey.
It is hard to identify the bodies because they throw away ID cards to avoid deportation. The Red Cross helps families find missing relatives, but most people remain unknown. Recently, a man named Bathie Barry died at sea. His grave is a symbol of the lost lives of migrants.
Difficult words: disappearance (when someone goes missing), hypothermia (when the body temperature is too low), to avoid (to keep away from something or stop oneself from doing something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What challenges does Modesto Martinez face in identifying the bodies of migrants who die during their journey to El Hierro?
