A man touches an orca – level 2
27-05-2024 07:00
A video on social media showed a man jumping off a boat and touching an orca. Other people in the video laughed and cheered. The incident happened near Devonport, Auckland, when a male orca and a calf were swimming near the boat.
Orcas are very important in New Zealand and are at high risk of extinction. There are fewer than 200 animals left. It is illegal to disturb or swim with them. New Zealand fined the 50-year-old man 600 dollars for trying to touch the animal. Officials said the man’s actions were very dangerous for both himself and the orca. Luckily, the animals didn’t get hurt.
Difficult words: calf (a young animal, for example, a cow, elephant, or whale), extinction (when an animal no longer exists), disturb (to make someone scared or worried).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What were the consequences for the man who tried to touch the orca near Devonport, Auckland, and why were his actions considered dangerous?
