African restaurants in London – level 2

17-02-2025 15:00

African food is becoming more popular in London, and Akoko is one of the most famous African restaurants. It has a Michelin star and mixes West African ingredients with modern cooking styles.

The owner, Aji Akokomi, wanted to create a fine-dining African restaurant because he couldn’t find one that had the quality of French or Chinese restaurants. He wanted Akoko to serve high-quality African food in a stylish way. Other restaurants, like Chisuru, are also helping African food grow in London. People from African countries feel at home with flavors they know, while others enjoy trying something new.

Aji believes that African fine dining will continue to grow. With more West African restaurants opening, African food is becoming an important part of London’s restaurant scene.

Difficult words: fine dining (a special and expensive style of eating at a restaurant), stylish (of good quality and design), scene (an area of activity or interest).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What challenge did Aji Akokomi face in finding a fine-dining African restaurant, and how is the rise of places like Chisuru shaping London's culinary landscape?
