Australia bans social media for children – level 1

03-12-2024 07:00

A new law will start in Australia in 2025. Children under 16 cannot use social media like Instagram or TikTok.

If the companies do not stop children, they will pay a lot of money. The government says that social media is bad for children. It can make them sad and scared. 77% of people in Australia agree with this new rule. But some people think it is a bad idea. They say that kids may use other unsafe websites.

Big companies like Google and Meta say that the rule is too fast and not clear. Other countries may also make rules like this.

Difficult words: law (a rule of a country), scared (worried or frightened), agree (to say yes).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the potential consequences for companies if they do not prevent children under 16 from using social media platforms like Instagram or TikTok, according to the new Australian law?
