Australia shark attack – level 3
10-06-2026 07:00
A tragic shark attack has shocked the coastal town of Albany in Western Australia.
A 35-year-old local man was critically mauled by a large Great White shark, estimated to be 4.5 meters long, while he was spearfishing with his family just 10 meters off Michaelmas Island.
Family members and emergency workers responded quickly and placed the man on a boat for a 13-kilometer journey back to the mainland. Unfortunately, the man died before reaching the marina. Residents expressed deep sadness and noted that in such a small community where everyone knows each other, this loss affects everyone.
A satellite monitoring receiver had detected a tagged Great White shark nearby just hours before the attack. This is Australia’s fourth fatal shark attack of 2026, and the third involving a spearfisher in only four weeks. Spearfishing is highly dangerous because bleeding or distressed fish quickly attract predators.
Difficult words: mauled (badly injured by an animal through biting, scratching, or tearing), spearfishing (catching fish underwater using a sharp stick called a spear), distressed (very worried, unhappy, or in pain).
