Austria has new rules for refugees – level 3

19-07-2024 07:00

The Austrian government, led by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, has introduced new requirements for asylum seekers.

These measures aim to integrate refugees better and ensure they understand Austrian values and social norms. Refugees must now perform charitable work for the federal, state, and local governments. They can also work in companies with at least five community service workers, in nursing services, homeless shelters, or winter services. Additionally, the benefits card trial, which provides state support payments to asylum seekers, will be expanded. Those who fail to meet their obligations will have their state benefits reduced.

A new catalog of obligations will also be introduced, providing information about Austrian culture, values, and social etiquette. Karner stated that these measures will give refugees a structured and meaningful everyday life while benefiting Austrian society. The tougher immigration policy has already reduced the pressure on Austria’s care system, with a significant drop in asylum claims.

Difficult words: integrate (to become part of a group or society), charitable (related to helping people in need), etiquette (rules for polite behavior).
