Baby is born after a womb transplant – level 3

11-04-2025 07:00

Grace Davidson is the first woman in the UK to give birth after a womb transplant. She was born with a rare condition where the womb is missing or doesn’t develop fully, so she couldn’t have children.

In February 2023, doctors performed a womb transplant operation that changed her life. Her sister Amy, who already had two children, donated her womb for the transplant. Grace later gave birth to a baby girl and named her after Amy to honor her sister’s gift.

This act of kindness deeply moved Grace, who felt broken before the operation. She said her quality of life had been poor because of the sadness she felt over not being able to have children. But that sadness disappeared when her baby was born. She now feels joy and fulfillment.

The baby’s father said it was an easy decision to support the transplant. He feels thankful every day and says they will never forget the role Amy played in making their family possible.

Difficult words: womb (a part of the body where a baby grows), transplant (a medical operation to put an organ into another person), fulfillment (a feeling of happiness and satisfaction).

Why did Grace name her baby girl after her sister, and what changes did the transplant bring to her emotional well-being and family life?
