Bad fans stop a big football game – level 3

15-05-2026 07:00

The 317th Prague derby between Slavia and Sparta ended in chaos during stoppage time.

Although Slavia was leading 3-2 and was very close to winning the league title, hundreds of fans invaded the pitch. During the riot, some supporters attacked Sparta players, including goalkeeper Jakub Surovcík.

The police are now investigating these attacks, the use of pyrotechnics, and significant damage to the stadium, which is estimated at up to 40,000 euros. The League Football Association (LFA) is currently deciding on punishments. Slavia faces a potential 0-3 forfeit loss, which would mean they lose the points from the match and their lead at the top of the table would shrink. Additionally, the club might receive a massive fine and a ban on fans entering the stadium for future matches. Slavia’s president, Jaroslav Tvrdik, apologized for the incident and admitted that the fans’ behavior destroyed what should have been a celebration of the championship.

Difficult words: derby (a sports match between two teams from the same city or area), stoppage time (extra minutes added to the end of a match because of delays), significant (important or large enough to be noticed), forfeit loss (when a team is forced to lose a game because they broke the rules).
