China underground lab – level 2
18-10-2024 07:00
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) in China will soon begin a big experiment to study neutrinos.
Neutrinos are very small particles created by nuclear reactions. They can pass through things like the human body without any effect. JUNO will study how these particles change and what that can tell us about the universe. JUNO is located underground and costs 300 million dollars. It will get data from nearby nuclear power plants and may also study particles from the sun and the Earth.
The project will start in 2025 and help scientists understand how Earth’s plates move. A similar US project called DUNE is having delays because of money problems. JUNO may become the world leader in this important area of research.
Difficult words: experiment (a test which scientists do), data (information), particle (a small or the smallest amount of something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is the purpose of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory's upcoming experiment and how might it contribute to our understanding of the universe?
