Close to the Sun – level 1

01-01-2025 07:00

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe flies closer to the Sun than any other spacecraft. On Christmas Eve, it comes very close, 6.1 million km from the Sun.

There is very high heat, 1,400°C, and dangerous energy from the Sun. The probe also becomes the fastest object people make. It moves at 692,000 kph.

The spacecraft has a special cover which protects it from the Sun’s heat. It is studying the corona, the outside part of the Sun. This area is hotter than the Sun’s surface. Scientists want to know why. The probe will help us learn more about the Sun and how it affects Earth.

Difficult words: probe (spacecraft), protect (to keep safe), surface (the outside or top layer of something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What is the purpose of NASA's Parker Solar Probe and how does it protect itself from the Sun's heat and energy?
