Close to the Sun – level 2
01-01-2025 07:00
NASA’s Parker Solar Probe flew closer to the Sun than ever before on Christmas Eve. It came within 6.1 million km of the Sun’s surface.
The probe faced extreme heat of 1,400°C and dangerous radiation. It also became the fastest object ever made, traveling at 692,000 kph, faster than flying between London and New York in 30 seconds!
The spacecraft has a special heat shield to protect its systems and keep them cool. It is studying the Sun’s corona, the outer layer of its atmosphere, which is hotter than the Sun’s surface. Scientists hope the probe’s data will explain how the Sun works. This information will help us understand space weather which can affect Earth.
Difficult words: probe (spacecraft), radiation (dangerous energy from the Sun), shield (a piece of metal or other material which protects someone or something).
You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.
What is the purpose of NASA's Parker Solar Probe's mission to the Sun and how does it protect itself from the extreme heat and radiation?
