Cuba energy crisis – level 2

06-12-2024 07:00

Cuba had a big blackout that left millions without power.

By the evening, power plants produced only 533 MW of electricity, far less than the 3,000 MW the country needed. The government said it would restore electricity to hospitals and water systems first, and schools stayed closed. In Havana, power returned to some homes, but many people were still without light.

Old power systems, less fuel from other countries, and natural disasters cause these problems. The main power plant in Matanzas stopped working, and other plants were not ready. People in Cuba also don’t have enough food, water, and medicine, and they start to protest. The government now asks businesses to use renewable energy and reduce their power use.

Difficult words: blackout (when homes and businesses are without electricity), restore (to bring back), renewable (when you can use something again).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are some of the reasons for the frequent power outages in Cuba, and what measures is the government taking to address these issues?
