Cuba, USA and Venezuela – level 2
15-05-2019 15:00
Cuba does not produce enough food for its people, and it imports 70% of food. A rationing system started in 1959 and people still use it.
Now, the Cuban government put even more rationing into place. Food like chicken, eggs and rice are given to each person in small amounts. Cuba says that it has to do this because of American restrictions.
The relationship between Cuba and the USA is not good. Cuba supports Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, but the USA supports his opponent, Juan Guaidó.
The USA also says that Cuba has soldiers in Venezuela. It says that if Cuba does not tell the soldiers to go away, it will put a complete embargo on Cuba. On the other hand, Cuba says that there are no Cuban soldiers in Venezuela.
Difficult words: rationing system (a system when each person gets a little food), restriction (limits, stopping something), embargo (stop imports and exports).
