Cuba, USA and Venezuela – level 3
15-05-2019 15:00
People import seventy per cent of Cuba’s food, and there has not been enough food in the country recently.
Cuban citizens have been on a rationing system since 1959, but the government now imposed strict rationing on basic foods like chicken, eggs and rice.
The Cuban government said that the new rationing system is necessary after the USA put more restrictions on the country. The relationship between Cuba and the USA is not good because each country supports a different leader in Venezuela. Cuba has close ties to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro while the USA strongly backs his opponent, Juan Guaidó.
The USA also said that it would put a complete embargo on Cuba if Cuba did not send away its soldiers in Venezuela, but Cuba said that there were no Cuban soldiers there.
Difficult words: rationing system (a system when each person gets a little food), impose (set, put), embargo (ban/stop imports and exports).
