Eating insects in the EU – level 1

21-02-2025 15:00

Some people say that the EU is selling dangerous food. This food comes from insects.

Scientists say that this is not true. The EU allows a new food ingredient. It is yellow mealworm powder. But before it happens, the EU checks that it is safe for people.

Insects can be good food. They are better for the natural world than meat. They need less land and water. People eat insects in many countries, for example, in Africa or South America. But this is new in Europe. Many people in Europe do not want to eat insects. They feel insects are dirty. So it may take a long time before people accept them.

Some politicians do not like this new idea. They say that the EU is hurting farmers.

Difficult words: insect (a small animal which usually has six legs and wings), allow (to let someone have or do something), accept (to agree to take or do something).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What factors make insects a more sustainable option than meat, and why might Europeans be reluctant to include yellow mealworm powder in their diets?
