Eating insects in the EU – level 2

21-02-2025 15:00

Some people online say that the EU allows dangerous insect-based foods, but scientists say this is false.

The European Commission approved a new insect ingredient, UV-treated yellow mealworm powder, after checking that it is safe. Insects can be a good food source because they are better for the environment than meat. They need less land and water and cause less pollution. People already eat insects in some countries, but it is not common in Europe.

Some politicians, mostly from Eurosceptic and far-right groups, think the EU is replacing meat with insects and harming farmers. Even though scientists say insects are safe, many Europeans don’t want to eat them. People often feel disgusted by new foods, which may slow down their use in Europe.

Difficult words: insect-based (coming from insects), approve (to agree or say yes to something), disgusted (when you dislike something very much).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

How are insects portrayed as beneficial to the environment, and what concerns do certain political groups have regarding their use in food products?
