Euro 2024 – level 3

19-06-2024 07:00

Switzerland began their 2024 Euros campaign with a 3-1 victory over Hungary in Cologne.

Breel Embolo returned after an 18-month injury break and celebrated his decisive goal that secured the win. Coach Murat Yakin praised Embolo’s resilience despite his limited pre-tournament training. Switzerland initially led 2-0, with Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer scoring. Hungary fought back with a goal from Barnabas Varga, but Embolo’s late goal sealed Switzerland’s win. Italy also secured a 2-1 win against Albania in Dortmund, recovering after conceding the fastest goal in the tournament’s history. In Berlin, Spain triumphed 3-0 over Croatia, with 16-year-old Lamine Yamal becoming the youngest player in European Championship history.

Switzerland’s next game is against Scotland, while Hungary faces Germany. The knockout stage starts on June 29, with the final in Berlin on July 15.

Difficult words: resilience (ability to recover quickly), concede (to allow a goal or point to be scored), knockout (a competition in which only the winners of each stage play in the next stage until there is the final winner).
