First woman becomes Sweden’s Prime Minister – level 3
30-11-2021 07:00
Sweden’s Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson became the largest Nordic nation’s first female prime minister a close vote in parliament.
Andersson faces a fragmented government after Sweden’s politics were upended by the far-right Sweden Democrats as growing gun crime and problems over immigration led to voter disillusionment. Her government only controls about a third of the parliament, and her spending proposal for next year is set to be ignored for an opposition proposal.
While the previous Prime Minister Stefan Lofven was able to form a government in a 2018 election, a similar solution looks distant for Andersson.
Difficult words: fragmented (in many pieces), upend (to turn something on its end or upside down), disillusionment (a feeling of disappointment after discovering the truth about something).
