Georgia protests – level 2

05-12-2024 07:00

In Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, thousands of people protested after the government delayed talks to join the EU until 2028.

Police used pepper spray and water cannons and arrested 43 people. Many journalists got hurt, and some got hurt in previous protests already. Over 100 diplomats said the government doesn’t support Georgia’s goals, but the Prime Minister defended his decision.

Protests continued, and students and workers joined them, too. Some schools and offices stopped working to show their disagreement. Many people believe the government is working with Russia rather than helping Georgia join the EU. Workers and journalists are planning more protests in the coming weeks.

Difficult words: delay (to make something happen at a later time), defend (to speak for something), disagreement (a situation in which people don’t have the same opinion).

You can watch the original video in the Level 3 section.

What are the reasons behind the ongoing protests in Georgia's capital, Tbilisi, and who are participating in these demonstrations?
