Thousands of protesters gathered in Tbilisi after Georgia’s government paused European Union EU accession talks until 2028.

Demonstrators chanted ‘traitors’ and displayed photos of journalists allegedly harmed by police during earlier protests. Riot police used pepper spray and water cannons to disperse crowds, with reports of violent clashes and 43 arrests. Many journalists were injured.

Over 100 diplomats and civil servants condemned the government’s decision, stating it contradicts Georgia’s strategic interests. The Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, justified the decision, accusing the EU of blackmail for questioning last month’s elections.

Protests continued, and students, civil servants, and universities joined to express disapproval. Many see the government’s actions as aligning with Russia. The situation remains tense, with more demonstrations expected.
