Haiti’s president killed – level 2
15-07-2021 07:00
Last week, a group of 28 armed men killed the Haitian president Jovenel Moise.
The incident happened at Moise’s home in the capital Port-Au-Prince at around 1 am. The attackers hurt the president’s wife, too, and she ended up in hospital.
The 53-year-old Moise became the president in 2017, but in 2019, there was a difficult political situation, and many people wanted Moise to resign. In January 2020, he continued to be in power but there were no elections. Some politicians said that Moise was in power illegally.
Haiti is the poorest American country, and it had many problems for a very long time. People are afraid that the death of the president will make the situation even worse.
Difficult words: armed (when someone carries a gun or weapon), resign (to leave a job), elections (when people vote a person for a political office).
